I've Got News!

I'm excited to be launching a new website very soon! It will be at this same address but don't worry...

All the old content will still be here.

christianmusicblog.com

This new domain speaks a little about what I'll be doing. For the most part, it will be more focused on people of faith who make music.

I'll still be making original music and writing songs (hopefully even more). And you can still find me on Facebook and stay up to date with the things I'm doing. But the big idea of the new site is all about serving Christian musicians.

Does this mean that the non-musical among you will be left out?

Not at all!

In fact, if you're a raving music fan, you'll probably be even happier...

Here's why:

The Podcast

Before the new site goes live, be on the lookout for a new podcast. I'm currently lining up some pretty amazing interviews with some people you may have heard of.

I won't mention names yet, but if you like getting a backstage look into the processes of how some of your favorite music is made, then you won't want to miss out on this!

We're still working on a launch date for both the podcast and the new site...

Sign Up For My newsletter...

You can stay informed on this whole process pretty easily! I've started a new mailing list for insider communication with my readers. If you've signed up already through the old blog subscriptions, no worries, you don't have to sign up again!

If you still don't wanna miss a beat on my blog posts, you can always subscribe to the RSS feed through your RSS reader of choice. I like Google Reader.

But in the email newsletter, I'll include things that won't be any where else - that's the best way to stay in the loop.

Have you signed up yet?

It's great to be back from a wonderful week of praying and getting clarity on some things.

Because of my retreat, I didn't post anything for a week. I figured a Monday Mix post would be appropriate to kick things off again.

As usual, I plan on aggregating just a few things into one post.

I'm looking forward to doing some new songs this year - songs that are popular and songs that are yet to be known.

One goal I have is to write more songs for our church. I've always been a big fan of churches that create original material for their ministries.

As a songwriter I got convicted last year that I was being complacent in my stewardship of our weekly song choices. I was falling off the horse on the side of never doing anything original.

This is not to say that doing other people's music is lazy.

Of course I'm not saying that. There will always be songs at a national and international level that are written for the body of Christ. These songs are gifts to the church.

But if local churches have their own gifted artists and writers, they should be utilizing them, trusting that God will bring forth the fruit, however He wants it, whenever He wants it.

Each local church has their own unique roll to play in the grand narrative of God's mission in the world; therefore, each church can have their own unique soundtrack that marks its own movement - no matter how large or small the movement is.

How To Plan A Personal Prayer Retreat

Next week, I'll be heading out for a two-day personal prayer retreat.

I've only done this a few times in my life, but, this time around, I plan to be prepared for it.

In the past, I would simply show up at these retreat centers, and then be like, "Ok God, here I am. What do you want to show me?"

There's certainly nothing wrong with that. It's better than nothing. But for me, because there was so much to think and pray about, it would take a few hours to clear my head, let alone get focused.

Learning from my past mistakes, I've decided to get more intentional this time. I want next week's retreat to be the best yet.

While thinking this through, I decided to write this post on how to plan a personal prayer retreat.

But before we get specific about planning an effective prayer retreat, there are a few important things to keep in mind:

God wants to teach you about himself first

Connect with God simply because it's why you were created. Don't start with getting clarity on your life or finding answers to your problems. Knowing God and being in His presence can bring so much peace, even in the midst of the same confusion you had when you realized you needed the retreat in the first place.

The main purpose of a prayer retreat should be to get refreshed in your relationship with God. Even if you have to make a lot of big, stressful decisions, a retreat shouldn't leave you feeling more overwhelmed when you leave.

God has the agenda and the outcome is in his hands

In all our planning, we must never forget that it is the Lord who makes our plans succeed. I was reminded yesterday in Proverbs 16 of this oft-neglected reality:

"The plans of the heart belong to man,
but the answer of the tongue is from the Lord."

Keeping those key principles in mind, you can then get specific with planning your time away. Here are 5 things to plan before you go, that will help your retreat be more successful. Read More.
